![]() This paper will examine the genesis and impact of the 1951 Code, showing how commercial and political interests were written into its provisions, how performance standards enabled new constructive types, and how Chicago served as a model for other American cities grappling with the disconnect between prewar codes and postwar technologies during the economic boom of the 1950s. Performance-based codes also created an industry out of the testing business Underwriters Laboratories, based in Chicago, grew from a small facility on Ohio Street to a sprawling campus in the northwest suburbs. Its influence on other city governments, who saw the building boom that Chicago enjoyed after its code’s passage, was profound, and its reliance on performance standards rather than proscriptive details allowed designers to more fully exploit the advances in glass and aluminum technology that emerged from wartime production. ![]() Building codes are rarely acknowledged for their impact on building design, but Chicago’s 1951 code opened up new directions for building cladding, interiors, and servicing.
